CIBUS: the best food safety ecosystem in Blockchain

The ideal scenario would be planting your own food and keeping your own livestock as it was back before industrialization and technological advancements. We are now too busy to plant our own food. In most developed countries, a very small percentage of farmers feed the entire country while the rest of the population focus on corporate positions within the major cities. During natural disasters such as hurricanes or flood, some roads become inaccessible and supply of food is cut. Such scenarios prompt us to think about ways of improving our food production methods and involving even those who reside in cities. Innovations such us the underground farm, Growing Underground, in London come up to try and supplement production of food. It is necessary that we all get involved in food production as it is the most essential of our basic needs.
Food production is not limited to farming alone, there are so many processes involved in ensuring that the food we it is of good quality and safe for human consumption. Setting up of food regulatory bodies is one of the steps governments have taken to standardize food production. The government does not, however, represent each view its citizens have. Consumer rights bodies were formed to make every voice heard. They keep both the government and food manufacturing companies in check.
On paper, these validation tests seem perfect but upon reviewing the numerous food scandals experienced around the world, one realizes that things are not as they seem. If there’s one commodity that needs to be trusted fully upon purchase, it is the food we are going to it. Many consumers have lost trust in the food industry, especially in packaged food. Food labelling laws are relaxed with so many loopholes that exposes the consumer to exploitation. Most packaged foods have a lot of claims on their labels but most of these are just marketing ploys by the manufacturers. The food manufacturing sector is more interested in profit margins and satisfied shareholders than its own market. Most consumers would trust the food from their local street vendor more compared to food in supermarkets. Hotels have not been spared either. Some hotels have very misleading menu items. Take for example, Kobe beef. A very popular but expensive meat. Only nine restaurants in the United States have been certified to serve it. There are however several restaurants that offer Kobe and very many people order not knowing that whatever they are getting is not Kobe beef. These restaurants usually have way cheaper prices per unit of Kobe beef compared to the certified Kobe beef sellers.
We may blame manufacturers for most of the food scandal, like the paprika incident in Hungary, but sometimes those at fault are their suppliers. Most suppliers are middlemen looking for large profit margins as they exploit small scale farmers. An exploited farmer is not able to improve any farming method. It becomes difficult for the to produce goods that are up to the safety and quality standards required. These produces may make it into the manufacturing process leaving the manufacturer with a potential law suit without their knowledge.
We are a developing world. We have made such great strides in technology, even in food production. These problems have however shown us that we need a solution that will offer transparency to all players in the food industry. One of the most vital developments in the tech world in the recent past is blockchain. It has endless possibilities due to its secure features and transparency. It takes a different approach towards the internet by building on decentralization of data to prevent any alteration and to make this data available and trustworthy to all involved parties. You could think of it as record book that even keeps its records of alteration. Application of a systematic structure such as this could be the key to solving the challenges faced in the food industry. The transparency and success of blockchain has been tested successfully in the cryptocurrency world with cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin gaining in value over the past years.
Building a transparent structure to ensure better quality and safety of food would be a great vision for the near future. There is a group of dedicated developers who have figured out a way to apply the blockchain platform to create a transparent environment where anyone can play a key role in ensuring that the food we produce and eat is of the best quality and safety standards available. This ecosystem they seek to implement is known as Cibus.
There is currently an on-going PRE TGE-token sale on Cibus tokens which will end on 28th February, 2018. This will then be followed by a one-month public ICO sale of the same tokens from 28th February to 28th March, 2018. The organization of the ICO and sale of the Cibus token are part of the roadmap to make this brilliant platform a reality. This ICO was designed for those who understand the vision the developing team had on the future of the food industry. It is a way for them and any other interested party to participate in the actualization of this platform.
What will they be helping to build? Cibus will be an open source where food related ideas can be exchanged and trading can take place. The blockchain platform will make sure that Cibus is as transparent as can be in all its processes. Cibus will have pillars that will support its goal. There will be eight sub division within the Cibus structure implemented in different phases that will focus on key areas of developmental interests within the food industry.
The exchange of ideas between consumers, farmers and food manufacturers is vital for the improvement of this industry. Cibus Social will take on the task of bridging the gap between food industry players. The success of social media in solving everyday challenges that we face in the world proves that good communications vital in solving any problem. For farmers and manufacturers, it is important that they get feedback on products they sell to consumers. They will be able to know what to do to make their products more suitable to the consumer through such feedback. Good reviews may also encourage food producers to make better products as they see appreciation in their work. For small scale farmers, Cibus social will provide the platform they need to expose their goods. Some consumers may have special dietary needs that can only be provided by such small-scale farmers. This would be a win-win situation for both groups. Manufacturing companies could also use this space to advice consumers on how to get the best out of their products or to even get opinions on which products to introduce and which ones to discontinue. To encourage participation by everyone, Cibus will have a reward program where users will be awarded based on their usage of the platform. This will especially target consumers as their feedback is required most.
The other important pillar in developing Cibus is Cibus Trace. This will be the most vital component within the Cibus structure in ensuring safer food of better quality. Cibus trace will use existing technology to track movement of food from the producer to the final consumer. This transparency will be important in creating, developing and maintaining the trust between the consumer and producers of food. One potential use of Cibus Trace is preventing food related disease outbreaks. The geographical location submitted by farmers and consumers will be used to determine the safety of food products within their respective areas. The goal is to quarantine any area with reported cases of say livestock diseases such as foot and mouth disease. Consumers will be able to make better food choices based on such information. Consumers will have a chance of knowing having any crop they want all year. The platform will connect many countries such that farmers from one region will be able to provide crops that have gone out of season in another area. There are endless possibilities for Cibus Trace that will only be realized with time.
One of the main aims of Cibus is to promote small scale farmers. This would not be possible without an e-commerce platform for them to sell their goods. Cibus Retail will deal exclusively with business to consumer transactions. Small scale farmers will be connected to a vast market for their products. Consumers will also have advantages within this space. There will be real time price comparison of products between different seller which will also provide consumers with options. Cibus Retail will provide consumers with information from Cibus social such as product reviews to help consumers make informed decisions before purchasing any product. Transactions within Cibus will only be done through Cibus tokens. Each transaction will attract a small fee that will be proportional to the size of the purchase. All purchases will be done securely as the Cibus system is built on the trusted blockchain platform. All transaction logs will be available when required.
The business to business aspect within the Cibus space will be handled by Cibus Trade. This will connect businesses that compliment each other in terms of their products. Large scale farmers and manufacturers will benefit greatly from this service. With Cibus Trade, transactions will be carried out in US dollars at the beginning before a complete switch to Cibus tokens. Transactions will still be made over the secure blockchain platform.
The four pillars described are the main building blocks for the Cibus structure. To make this even better, the Cibus structure will be reinforced by four other pillars to make it as convenient as possible.
Cibus will introduce an affiliate program dubbed Cibus Affiliate which is meant to increase the exposure of the Cibus structure. It will involve key personalities and professionals within the food industry in advertising and promoting Cibus and its product outside its ecosystem. The affiliate program will also have a reward system where rewards will be proportional to the number of visitors or new members one brings into the Cibus ecosystem.
Cibus Trade and Cibus Retail will involve movement of products from place to place. This will involve a lot of planning and logistics especially where borders may be crossed. Cibus Logistics will be introduced to counter this challenge by working hand in hand with third party logistical support companies to ensure that products are safely delivered in the best possible state. Cibus Logistics may opt to open up its own logistical company to make everything inhouse.
Cibus will offer an advertisement system that will improve consumer advertising experience and save on cost for the advertiser. The blockchain system will be used to categorize consumers and producers in such a way that only advertisements that are of interest to the consumer will be target towards them. Consumers’ information will only be used upon their consent.
The last reinforcing pillar is Cibus Escrow. Cibus Escrow will ensure all trading conditions are fulfilled as per the agreed transaction contract. A percentage of the transaction will be charged.
The Cibus ecosystem is designed to also create demand for Cibus tokens. This will ensure an increase in value of the tokens as its popularity crosses the Cibus borders to other online platforms. The Cibus bounty and referral program will aid greatly in this.
This is what Cibus wants to achieve and is the main purpose of the ICO, to provide funds that will enable the development of this platform. One hundred million tokens will be up for sale during the public ICO period. Purchases will be made through select cryptocurrencies which are bitcoin, litecoin, DASH and ethereum. The funds will be allocated to five departments involved in actualizing Cibus. Half of what is collected will be channeled to development of the whole ecosystem. 30% will be used for marketing and creating awareness. 5% will be reserved for legal fees. Another 5% will be used as contingency. The remaining portion (10%) will be for the daily running of the Cibus platform.
The CIBUS ecosystem is a means to achieve the value chain of Transparency, Traceability and Trust in Food Supplements.
